Reports emanating from some State house
correspondents have revealed that Lamorde’s fate
as Economic and Financial Crimes Commission
(EFCC) boss may have been sealed as President
Buhari plans to take
his anti-corruption fight to a
whole new level by merging Nigeria’s two anti-
corruption bodies and appointing a Lagos based
law expert by name Femi Felana as the head of
the new hybrid group.
Present EFCC boss, Ibrahima Larmode is currently
facing a senate probe into alleged accusations of
diverting recovered loots to the tune of N1Trn and
even giving out some recovered properties to
friends and relations.
The Inspector General of Police, Mr Solomon
Arase has already applied for Lamorde’s
withdrawal from the EFCC by asking for the release
of all police officers that have worked for the
commission for five years or more-Lamorde who
is a police ASP has worked for more than
ten. This move by the I-GP is also believed to be
laying the groundwork for an easy merge as most
senior officers of the commission will be affected
by the police order.
Former military administrator of Kaduna, Hameed
Ali was expected to head the EFCC but President
Buhari, in a report released by Dr Ogbonnaya
Onu’s aide explained that he believes his no
nonsense attitude will be more beneficial to
Nigeria if he is appointed as the Comptroller
General of the Customs-an agency believed to be
one of the most corrupt in the country.
So many people have complained that one of
Nigeria’s major problem is the duplication of
agencies and this case is a classic example
as the EFCC and ICPC execute the same mandate
The main stumbling block in this move is a
Gazette stating that only men that have worked in
the Military or forces can become heads of the
Anti-corruption bodies but a gazette is not a law
and the can be easily dealt with by adjusting the
new act of the hybrid agency.
Another stumbling block will be the possibility of
creating more unemployment in the country but
agencies can be merged without layoffs once
allowed to function as a bigger and more effective
one.
Femi Falana is a human rights activist and holds
the Senior Advocate of Nigeria title. He was born
in Ilawe Ekiti in Ekiti State and has always been on
the case of present leaders always trying to defend
the masses. His most recent notable contribution
being defending soldiers accused of refusing to
fight Boko Haram insurgents in the North East.
More than 3000 of those soldiers have since been
reabsorbed by the Nigerian Army
